“I do go into games trying to keep clean sheets but as long as we keep wining and we score more goals than them,” Birighitti said.
Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Mark Birighitti is disappointed to be conceding goals but admits he will happily trade a clean sheet as long as the team keeps winning.
The Jets have won their past three matches and are unbeaten in six but have not managed to keep a clean sheet since their 0-0 draw with Wellington in round three. Not that it bothers Birighitti.
“As long as the boys are winning and each week we keep performing and getting better a team, if I concede one or two goals and we’re still winning games I don-t see any problems in that,” he explained after training on Tuesday.
“I do go into games trying to keep clean sheets but as long as we keep wining and we score more goals than them.”
Birighitti was outstanding against Melbourne Heart, punctuated with a sharp reflex save from a close range David Williams shot but he was left stranded when a free kick deflected off Josh Mitchell into the net.
“It was disappointing, I go into every game trying to keep a clean sheet and to concede a goal like that was pretty disappointing, but overall happy with the performance,” he said.
After a difficult start to the season Birighitti believes the Jets are brimming with confidence after their recent performances and are keen to consolidate their position in the top four.
“Yeah things are going well, the team-s confidence is sky high at the minute and so it should, undefeated in six games,” he added.
“Another tough game this weekend against Sydney but the boys are shaping up pretty well and looking forward to the challenge.
Sydney FC are the only side to beat the Jets this season and Birighitti felt the Jets were primed to gain revenge on the Sky Blues come Saturday night.
“We had a very disappointing start to the season but slowly we-ve got better and better as a side and we-re definitely looking to get one on them this weekend,” he said.
“We know it-s going to be a tough ask and they-re on a bit of a roll as well, we-re going to have to be on our toes and I-m sure the boys can go out there and get another three points.”
Birighitti recognised the threat Italian maestro Alessandro Del Piero poses this weekend and believes the team will be prepared for Sydney-s marquee man.
“Obviously he-s a top quality player but our confidence is sky high at the moment, we-ll go through it during the week in the video session and work on a way to keep him quiet,” he said.
“To keep that discipline in the back four and try not to concede as many set pieces because you know what he can do over a dead ball, but I-m sure the boys will be on their toes to stop him.”
