Roar-s Tameka Butt displayed the standout performance of the match, with three goals against her name to assist her squad to a place in the Semi Finals next weekend.
Brisbane showed they were ready to defend their title as Grand Final Winners of the Westfield W-League from kickoff today against the Newcastle Jets, with Brisbane skipper, Clare Polkinghorne, scoring in just the second minute as a result of a scuffle in the box.
The Jets quickly tried to return the favour in the goalmouth when a shot in the box was sent wide to Carlie Ikonomou whose strong kick deflected off the top corner of the goal.
Moments later, Kirstyn Pearce put in an impressive defensive effort to clear the ball with a header over the crossbar after Brisbane attempted to find a player in the box.
A corner opportunity for Jets kicked by Ikonomou was sent over the bar by her fellow Jets players waiting in the box.
At the opposite end of the field Jets keeper, Alison Logue, saved what looked like a second goal for Brisbane, catching a well crossed corner from Elise Kellond-Knight.
With Logue out of her goals, defender Stacey Day was forced to clear the ball in the danger zone, however in the 19th minute, Joanne Burgess sprinted down the wing to Butt in the centre who then fired at Logue. Logue saved the first attempt, however Butt slotted the ball into the back of the net on her second attempt.
Brisbane remained relentless in attack despite the two goal buffer with Logue continuing to receive a work out by the opposition.
The Jets found another chance in front of the goals as Renee Cartwright crossed to Tara Andrews in the centre who slammed the ball at Dumont, but the Jets remained goalless.
Butt sent a left foot attempt just shy of the goalmouth, before Brisbane scored a third goal when Joanne Burgess sent the ball to Sasha McDonnell from the right who then crossed to Butt on the left who slipped the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the goal for a double.
Newcastle gained presence in Brisbane-s half, but quickly lost possession as Brisbane returned to their persistent attack.
Brisbane continued their onslaught of goal attempts, with the Jets finding presence again in the opposition-s half, though the score remained at 3-0 until the halftime whistle.
The second half saw Jets Head Coach Wayne O-Sullivan push Stacey Day forward into midfield in an attempt to find a goal of their own.
Brisbane came out of the change rooms looking less enthusiastic than the first half, which allowed the Jets to capitalise on presence in the opposition-s half.
Early in the second half, Andrews paired with Kate Hensman and Caitlin Jarvie pushed the ball towards the goal, but were stopped by Dumont in the final third.
Moments later, Cartwright took a runner up field to face Dumont but both left on the ground as Dumont saved the goal.
Butt continued to trouble the Jets defence, with a strike along the ground which passed just wide of the Jets- goal, before she claimed a hattrick in the 66th minute, poking the ball into the back of the net from inside the box.
The Jets were handed a golden opportunity when Jarvie took a runaway towards Brisbane-s goalmouth and faced Dumont in a one on one, though Jarvie-s shot deflected off Dumont-s hands.
With just ten minutes of the match remaining, Brisbane refused to faulter, with Burgess scoring yet another goal to extend her side-s lead to a huge five goals to zero.
Two minutes before the end of normal time, a Hensman shot sent Dumont to the ground who fumbled the ball, but caught it on a second attempt to keep the Jets without a goal.
Brisbane-s ruthless attack continued until the 90th minute, when Lana Harch scored the final game of the match to see the result sit at 6-0.
Despite finishing the season in last place on the competition table, Head Coach Wayne O-Sullivan is pleased with the progress of his young squad and is looking to evolve the squad further next year.
“We achieved a lot of the things that we set out to achieve by the end of the season but in all honesty we probably thought win, lose, draw, we would-ve done better but I think the table is no reflection of our performances.”
“Between now and next year we will take most of the girls in this squad into a development squad and bring in a few more experienced players as well to add to the culture we have evolved,” he concluded.
The Jets will now have to wait until next season to make a return to the finals, while Brisbane Roar will now face the Central Coast Mariners next weekend in one of two Semi Finals of Season 2 of the Westfield W-League.
