New signing Elizabeth Eddy has become another name in the long list of international players to wear Jets colours, but the American already has ties to her new country.
The 30-year-old midfielder arrived to Newcastle over the weekend as part of a loan deal from Gotham FC, who feature in the top league of football in USA.
The deal was one Eddy admitted she’d been angling for for some time, and believed the move would extremely beneficial for not only her career on the field, but off it too.
Why did she want to move to Australia so badly? Advice from her father.
“Back in 1987, my dad raced in the America’s Cup in Perth,” Eddy said.
“He has told us lots of epic stories about his time down under.
“For the past four years, I’ve been trying to play here and it hasn’t worked out, but this year it did, and I think it will be one of the most impactful seasons of my life.
“It’s really neat to have the opportunity to experience playing soccer in another country as well.
“I’m looking forward to having my own stories from to tell one day.”
The veteran central player already has some international experience after a short stint with top Swedish side Vittsjo GIK where she diversified her style to often play in a wide defender role.
On top of that, the former United States youth representative also had a rather decorated college career at the Division 1 school of University of Southern California where she played 77 games, scored 16 goals, and was named the Female Trojan of the Year in 2013/14.
With so much experience under her belt, Eddy said she’s ready to help the team and focused on success.
“This season I want to win,” she said.
“If we each get a little bit better each day, we can all be proud of what we accomplish together on the field and off the field.
“When this season ends my hope is that we have each grown as people and players.
“I love to compete so I’m looking forward to playing and getting to know my teammates and the rest of the staff.”
