The Newcastle Jets have appointed former Jets shot-stopper Neil Young as the Club’s goalkeeper coach.
Young made nine appearances for the Jets during two seasons at the Club between 2009 and 2011.
The 34-year-old then made the switch to Perth Glory where he served as the back-up for Danny Vukovic during the 2011/12 Hyundai A-League season, before taking over as goalkeeper coach for the following two seasons.
Young said he was looking forward to working with the Jets’ goalkeeping trio of Mark Birighitti, Ben Kennedy and John Solari.
“I’m excited to work with this group of goalkeepers and I’m looking forward to getting them in good shape for the upcoming season,” Young said.
“Mark was part of the Australian squad that went to Brazil for the World Cup and is obviously in line for a Socceroos gig at some stage, so hopefully I can push him forward towards that.
“I know Ben well from my time at the Jets previously and I know the qualities he has as a goalkeeper, so I’m sure we will work well together as well.
“John is a young goalkeeper with potential to get better and I’ll be looking to get the best out of him every day at training.”
Newcastle Jets CEO Robbie Middley said he was pleased to have Young on board.
“Neil knows what Newcastle is all about from his previous stint at the Club and he brings plenty of expertise and experience to the Jets,” Middleby said.
“We’re confident he’ll be able to get the best out of our goalkeeping group and prepare them for a big season ahead.”
